Jabbar Savalan has received a presidential pardon as a result of Amnesty International's Write for Rights campaign. He was imprisoned by the Azerbaijani government for possession of marijuana, when just a day earlier, he called for Arab Spring inspired protests against the government on Facebook. With our next meeting a while away, we just wanted to update you all on what we have been thinking about in terms of current and future projects.

T-Shirt Sales: We are going to start t-shirt sales again sometime after finals. Also, if you know of any events coming up where we might be able to sell shirts, let Mr. Jannke, Mr. Murphy, Jenna or I know.
Jamnesty: Jamnesty is scheduled for April 27th. We are going back to the basics, and will most likely be donating our proceeds to Amnesty International as they celebrated their 50th anniversary this past year. Please think about other possible causes and ideas that would improve the event--we are open to suggestions!
30 Hour Famine: Some of you expressed interest in participating in the famine, and I do not think we will not be able to do it with our Amnesty Club because it is based with a religious organization. However, I am wondering how many would still be interested if we did an event out of school. If you are, please let me (Brenna) know.

Movie Night

Movie Night was fun last night. Lots of food and cool new tees! We saw Hotel Rwanda and learned about the genocide that occurred there in the 1990s. Can anyone tell us how many genocides have occured in the world SINCE the Holocaust?

We are promoting a FreeRice.com competition next week as part of Spirit Week. Student Congress is graciously awarding extra spirit points to each class. However, this is a competition, so the class that earns the most “rice” earns the most spirit points.

Simply go to FreeRice.com and answer questions about language, geography, science, math, literature, etc. For each correct answer FreeRice.com donates 10 grains of rice to the UN's World Hunger Programme, which in turn delivers it to the world’s hungry. No money involved, just time.

Congo Tour

On Friday, we held 2 assemblies. Approximately 650 students participated. They saw a screening of a new film, Tony, from Invisible Children. We raised hundreds of dollars through donations and merchandise sales. All the proceeds are being used to implement the Protection Plan to stop the LRA's senseless killings.

Invisible Children is an organization working with children in Uganda and Rwanda to end the use of child soldiers and support schooling for former soldiers. "My name is Allysen Mahaffey and I am the New England representative for Invisible Children. I just left you a voicemail but also wanted to contact you via e-mail. I saw your screening request for an Invisible Children event at Ledyard High School, and wanted to contact you to see if you are still interested in helping set something up at Ledyard for our upcoming Fall tour. We are so excited to inform you that this Fall Tour we are once again bringing two Ugandan advocates over to the U.S. to tour with us. Joining our tour this Fall will be both a Ugandan student advocate and either a teacher or mentor from each of our partner schools in northern Uganda that our Schools for Schools clubs raise funds for each year. Similar to the Legacy Tour, they will share their story and advocate for their country and people, so it will be an impactful and powerful presentation we'd love to bring to Ledyard High School. In addition to the two Ugandan advocates, a past Schools for Schools student who won the trip to Uganda for their incredible efforts will also tour with us.

Jamnesty is coming soon, April 1st. Our cause is violence against women. We still need to decide on a specific organization to support. Several members have ideas, but we need to decide at our next meeting ASAP. The mandatory band meeting is set up for March 11 in my room after school.

Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week (9/28/09 - 10/2/09) is an event to raise awareness about censorship around the globe. We are trying to combat the injustices against writers who have been punished for expressing their beliefs. Amnesty has teamed up with the library at Ledyard High to encourage students to read banned books and sign petitions and speak up for the writers around the world who have been imprisoned or treated unfairly.

Violence Against Women Screening

The film screening last night was marvelous. About a dozen students came. We ate cupcakes and watched the film. Next, we watched part of the online discussion, followed by our own discussion, which proved most interesting. The whole night was so fun and productive that the participants decided to make it a regular occurrence. A new student group will be forming called Cupcakes and Causes. More information to come and look for its new Facebook group.

Chickumbuso Bracelets

Our main project this fall was to promote the concept of peace. Over 200 of our shirts made it out into the school community. The campaign culminated with a day of peace on November 24, 2008, were as many people in the school as possible wore symbols of peace.
